How a WhatsApp click-to-chat link works

Click to chat is WhatsApp’s own feature and works on phones and WhatsApp Web. The only requirement is that the number has an active WhatsApp account.

  1. Use international format

    Country code, then the number, with no plus sign, no leading zero of the local number, and no brackets or dashes. In Saudi Arabia, 0501234567 becomes 966501234567.

  2. Build the basic link

    Put the number after wa.me/, so the link is https://wa.me/966501234567. Anyone who taps it gets a chat with you.

  3. Add a ready message (optional)

    Append ?text= followed by the message, URL-encoded (a space becomes %20, and Arabic letters are encoded too). The tool above does the encoding for you.

  4. Test before you share

    Tap “Test in WhatsApp” and check that the chat opens on your number with the right text. The tool accepts Arabic-Indic digits and drops a leading zero for you.

Where to use your WhatsApp link

  • Instagram and TikTok bio

    Put the link in your bio’s website field, and let the first line of the bio say “Message us on WhatsApp”.

  • Google Business Profile

    Use it as the button link on your profile’s posts and updates, so people who find you on Maps can message you right away.

    One short line under your name, “Quick questions on WhatsApp”, saves customers from copying your number.

Tips for a WhatsApp link with a prefilled message

A ready message makes the first step easy for the customer and gives you context before you read a word.

  • Keep it short and clear, like “Hi, I’d like to ask about booking”.
  • Mention the source or product (“I saw your Instagram ad…”) so you know what they need.
  • Use a different message for each place you share the link, and you’ll see which one brings more chats.
  • Customers can edit the text before sending, so don’t rely on it staying exactly as written.
  • Leave out personal details and prices that may change; links get shared and stay around.
  • If you run more than one number (sales and support), make a link for each and label it clearly.
